Plymouth Twestival hits the headlines

Posted on: at 1021 - Comment

Plymouth Twestival is in today’s edition of the Plymouth Herald.

“SOCIAL networkers in Plymouth are being invited to meet their virtual friends in the flesh at a charity festival.

The city is joining hundreds of cities across the world on Thursday March 25 by holding a Twestival Global event to raise money for Concern Worldwide.

A Twestival is a global charity fundraising event organised using the online micro-blogging service Twitter and other social media networks.

Over 200 cities across the world will be taking part in the event but this is the first time Plymouth has hosted its own Twestival.

Lead organiser Katy Creates said: “A Twestival is a fantastic opportunity to use social media networks for social good. Plymouth Twestival is being run entirely by volunteers from all walks of life brought together through social media networking event Devon Social Media Cafe.

“My thanks goes out to all those volunteers and sponsors for their help and support so far.

“Everyone is welcome to attend the Twestival, even non-Twitterers. It’s going to be a really fun night and I hope everyone will be inspired to dig deep to donate money. It’s a great cause and there’s also a little friendly rivalry between other local Twestivals in Cornwall and Exeter so we really want to beat their fundraising targets.”

Plymouth Twestival Official Sponsorship Pack now available

Posted on: 25 February 2010 (3 weeks ago) at 2017 - Comment

Using social media for social good…

When you choose to support Plymouth Twestival and Concern Worldwide where does your money go?

This pack (prepared by @Chris_Penberthy) explains in more detail the difference your support will make to the thousands of children across the world who don’t have access to education.

Many children are simply too poor to go to school. They are often forced into child labour to help support their families.

As an alternative, Concern runs its own schools offering ‘non-formal education’. Through intensive schooling these can take children who have fallen behind into formal education.

Concern also runs drop-in-centres for working and street children where they are taught literacy and numeracy.

The average cost of providing learning for an out of school child through non formal education or drop in centres is just £50/year.

Plymouth Twestival is raising money for Concern’s work in providing schools and learning environments for out of school children. We would like to raise at least £4,000 at Plymouth Twestival in order to provide this essential basic education for 800 or more children.

To do this we need your help.

If you are a business or organisation based in Plymouth or the surrounding area and you want to show your support for Concern whilst reaching the vibrant and diverse local community that Plymouth’s social media scene embraces then we’d love to hear from you.

We still need sponsorship for drinks upon arrival at the event and food during the evening as well as donations for our auction and raffle - from a couple of bottles of wine to a £500 work of art - if you have something to donate get in touch.

Download the pack here.

The Delahays (@TheDelahays) to play at #plymtwest

Posted on: 18 February 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 0959 - Comment

Plymouth Twestival is delighted to announce that The Delahays will be playing at this year’s event.

The Plymouth based 4 piece band have a fantastic reputation and have built both a group of loyal followers and string of venues that want them back. The band’s driving ambition is to create a new and exciting blend of music suitable for the past, present and future.  This certainly looks like it is being achieved.

“With so many indie rock bands popping up all over the place, it’s great to see one local act in particular branching out in a rather different direction. While the Delahays are not without their indie influences, they veer more towards funk and hip hop with the occasional jazz overtones, creating a fusion of sound that is not only pretty original in these parts it’s also winning them friends and fans wherever they play”

Francis and the Drakes (@francisdrakes) to play at #plymtwest

Posted on: 17 February 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 1517 - Comment

Plymouth Twestival is delighted to announce that Francis and the Drakes will be playing at this year’s event.

The band were recently featured in a campaign by Jamie Oliver to find new and original UK acts. They also spent much of 2009 touring the highly praised Arlington Road sessions, finishing it off in style by playing live on New Years Eve for BBC Radio Devon.

Francis and the Drakes are four proud Plymothians, playing harmonious acoustic ramshackle and roll. The most important ingredient of the bands live shows is in the obvious fact that this is a band that just love playing together - you can feel it. The band write original songs that have their roots in the people and places of the Westcountry, and in particular, Plymouths close association with the sea.”

Twestival is coming to Plymouth!

Posted on: 8 February 2010 at 1437 - Comment

Calling all people living in and around Plymouth! Welcome to the Official Blog for Plymouth Twestival 2010 – using social media for social good.

On Thursday 25th March a fundraising event will take place in Plymouth to help raise money for Concern Worldwide (@concern). This money will help people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives - improvements they can sustain without ongoing support. Around the globe hundreds of local Twestival (Twitter + Festival) events will be taking place with coverage being broadcast over the internet – Plymouth is delighted to be one of the participating cities.

Event Details

The main focus of the event will be around raising money through a charity auction. There will be plenty of top class entertainment provided as well as some delicious refreshments. The items for auction, entertainment and refreshments will all be provided by local individuals and organisations – Plymouth is a fantastic city and we want to utilise it to ensure that our very own Twestival is a massive success with plenty of money being raised.

A series of blog posts will be used to provide official and detailed updates about the event. Please read this blog for updates, use Twitter to follow us or keep an eye out for #plymtwest

How can you get involved?

Please contact Katy Creates on 07595 282230 or email katy.creates@prdogs.com if you would like to:

· Help out as a volunteer on the night

· Become a main sponsor of the event

· Provide an item that can be used as part of the auction

· Provide refreshments

· Provide entertainment

· Other

Ticket details will be released shortly as a blog post.

Those organising the event are volunteers and it is impossible to approach every possible person or company that may be interested. If would like to get involved then please, please, please get in touch.

There is one more thing we can all do – spread the word (virtually and non-virtually)!

Thank you.
